ATLAS™ 300 is a continuous speed supervision radio based train control system with moving block operation. It is based on GSM-R for the track to train communications and on Eurobalise as spot transmission device, mainly for location referencing. The RBC provides information to the trains and knows each train through its unique identity.
Train location and train integrity supervision are performed by the trackside RBC in cooperation with the train.

In the fixed block system, a section of the track is fixed by a "block section" and generally only one train is allowed on each block. In the moving block, an area is defined by the braking distance and the length of the train. It moves with the train allowing better use of the track with smaller headways.

Interoperable
Speeds up to 500 km/h
ATP function
Cheaper Installation and Maintenance cost than ATLAS™ 200
Lower LCC
GSM-R continuous transmission
Moving Block operation for smaller headways
No Lineside Signals required GSM

Calculation of dynamic speed profile, taking into account the train running characteristics which are known on-board
Comparison of the actual train speed with the permitted speed and application of the brakes if necessary
Cab signaling to the driver
Selection of the most restrictive value of the different speeds permitted at each location ahead
The train reads Eurobalises and sends via GSM-R its position relative to the detected balises to RBC
The train receives a movement authority and all track characteristics, static speed profiles and distances via GSM-R
The train monitors train integrity and sends this information to RBC

Determine the movement authority for each train individually
Transmit movement authority and infrastructure data to each train individually
Interlocking to control trackside equipment like points
Control Centre for the management of the network
Knowing each train equipped with and running under the ERTMS/ETCS within the RBC area by its unique identity
Following each controlled train's location within the RBC area
Providing input for route locking and route releasing based on information received from the trains
