Spanish railway network administrator, ADIF , has signed with Alstom Transport a €16.5 million contract to equip with ERTMS Level 1 signalling solution the 20-km section between Castellbisbal and Can Tunis in the line linking Spain and France.
The upgrading of this section from conventional to ERTMS Level 1 signalling is part of the plan ADIF has put in place to modernize the freight corridor between France, Figueres-Perpignan and the Port of Barcelona. This section will also be equipped with a third rail to create a dual-gauge track. This system will allow trains to operate on both tracks, Spanish tracks with a wider gauge (1,668 mm) and UIC-compliant French tracks with a narrower gauge (1,435 mm) without changing rails.
Bringing this section into compliance with European standards will facilitate cross-border transport between France and Spain.
